Jean Frances Spear Brohawn, 95, of Cambridge peacefully passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at Chesapeake Woods Center. There she was affectionately known as “Hollywood”, and was so lovingly cared for by the entire staff for the past four years.
Jean was born in Cambridge, MD on October 12, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Russell (Captain Bus) Calvin Spear and Emily Dail Bryan. On December 24, 1938, Jean married Philip (Pike) Brohawn, Sr. who passed away on August 30, 1980.
Jean was the oldest living communicant at Christ Episcopal Church. She was a former member of the Altar Guild, taught Sunday school and for many years could be seen assisting during soup days. Her great grandfather, James Laurenson Bryan, M.D., served as assistant Rector of Christ Episcopal Church and was the first Superintendent of the Dorchester County Schools.
As a young girl, Jean worked at her father’s many confectionary stores throughout the town of Cambridge. Always interested in children and education, Jean worked as a hall monitor at Cambridge High School as it was transitioning to become Cambridge-South Dorchester High School.
Her love of music and dancing was well known within her family.
In past years she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, worked at the Robin Hood Shop, was a member of The Cambridge Country Club, Cambridge Woman’s Club and Cambridge Cotillion Club.
She was predeceased by her sisters: Charlotte Spear Brohawn, Lee Spear Mills and Billie Spear Hill; and one brother Russell Calvin (Bussie) Spear, Jr.
She is survived by children: Philip Brohawn, Jr. and his wife Cookie, Barbie Brohawn and her husband Steve and David Russell Brohawn and his wife Anna (all of Cambridge, MD); and grandchildren: Jennifer Brohawn Atchison (Dave) of Salisbury, MD; Bridget Brohawn Ketcham (Tim) of Salisbury, MD; Stevie Brohawn (Cristi) of Topping, Virginia, Nicholas Brohawn (Angela) of Powhatan, Virginia, Amy Brohawn Howard (CJ) of Cambridge, MD, Christopher Brohawn (Becky) of Cambridge, MD and Kendall Brohawn of Salisbury, MD.
She had 12 great grandchildren.
Surviving nieces and nephews in this area are: Donna Brohawn Roe, Janie Brohawn Adams, Charles S. Brohawn, Sr., Susan Brohawn Dickinson, Mary Ann Brohawn Hurley, Terry Brohawn Robbins, William Wise Jr., Ginger Wise Brannock, Gordon Hill, R.T. Mills; and Joanne Hill Newton of Charlotte, N.C. Deceased niece and nephews were: Joan Murphy Hurley, Crawford Murphy, Douglass Murphy and Barry Murphy.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 beginning 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Officiating will be Pastor Bob White, Rector of the church. Bagpiper Randy Welch will play Jean’s favorite hymns. The family will receive friends from 10:30 till 11 a.m.
A private family interment will follow in the family plot at East New Market Cemetery.
