Morris Smullen, Jr
Morris H. “Junior” Smullen, Jr., 63, of Cambridge passed away Saturday evening, October 26, 2013 at the Baltimore Veterans Hospital after a lengthy illness.
“Jr.” was born October 2, 1950 in Salisbury, a son of the late Helen Carey and Morris H. Smullen, Sr. He grew up in the Pittsville area and attended the local schools. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country for two years. After completing his duty he returned to his beloved Eastern Shore and took up residence in Cambridge.
For nearly all his life “Jr.” was a carpenter. He was very talented with his hands and could make anything out of wood. He had built a number of boats for people and also loved building miniature versions in which he was very meticulous in their details. Family and friends referred to him as a fix all man, there was nothing he couldn’t do when he put his mind to it. For a number of years “Jr.” worked at Wise Oil and Fuel. Most recently he was employed with Day’s Inn of Cambridge until his health no longer allowed him to continue.
“Jr.” was a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his family and enjoyed having them join him in his favorite pastime, fishing. His huge smiles after every catch will be remembered by them all. They will miss Pop fixing all the broken things and the sound of the classic rock music being played while he watched a sports game.
Surviving is his wife, Virginia Mills Smullen whom he married September 10, 1983; children Penny Mills, Vernon Mills and Scott Mills; brother Charles Smullen (Lillie); sister Linda Moore; grandchildren Shannan Middleton (Chris), Thomas Middleton, III, Stephanie Middleton and Brooke Greenhawk; ten great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are special friends Allison and Erin Paul.
Preceding him in death besides his parents are two nephews, Matthew and Nathan Smullen.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 1, 2013 beginning 6 p.m. at the Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge. The family will receive friends the hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Pastor Joe Kelly.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Gore, Vernon Mills, Woody Moran and Robert Hubbard.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in memory of “Jr.” can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD, 21803
