Benjamin G. Parks, 1st

Benjamin G. Parks, 1st, affectionately known as "Ben," passed away on June 4, 2025, in Chestertown, Maryland, at the age of 77. Born on November 17, 1947, in Dorchester County, Ben lived a life enriched by his work, family, and community.

Ben was proud to call himself a waterman, dedicating his career to crabbing and tonging. His remarkable skills led him to become a U.S. Merchant Marine Charter Boat Captain and a valued member of the Oyster Recovery Partnership, (ORP). He also played an active role within the Dorchester County Waterman's Association, contributing to the local maritime culture. A testament to his craftsmanship and personal connection with his son, Ben built his own workboat, aptly named “Captain’s Lady.”

Educationally, Ben was a proud graduate of South Dorchester High School, where he completed his studies in the class of 1965. His high school sweetheart, the former Saundra Pritchett, became his beloved wife on June 30, 1967. Together, they shared a life filled with laughter and love. Ben was known for his exceptional sense of humor, often making those around him chuckle with his playful nature and knack for jokes.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Ben enjoyed various hobbies, including hunting, which revealed his deep connection with the outdoors. He embraced life with joy, always loving to have a good time and ensuring those around him felt the warmth of his laughter.

Ben leaves behind a cherished family, including his wife, Saundra Lee Parks; their son, Ben Parks, II, and his wife, Cindy; and their grandchildren, Ben Parks, III and Levin Parks. He is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Payton Parks, and his siblings: Joyce Parks, Joann Ashton, Wanda Christopher (Howard), Pat Dean, and Jimmy Parks (Lynn). Ben is further survived by his brother-in-law, Gary Pritchett (Cindy), along with many nieces and nephews who adored him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Levin Parks and Ethel Josephine Rippons Parks. Ben leaves behind a legacy of humor, love, and a deep appreciation for life that will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
