October 2, 1954 – August 13, 2018
Carol Levy Ruark passed away peacefully on August 13, 2018.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Carol grew up on High School Road in Elkins Park. She attended Daemen College in Buffalo, NY and later graduated from Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as a Ceramicist in 1976.
In 2000 she discovered Cambridge, Maryland, visiting there on weekends by boat. She naturally began making friends and falling in love with Cambridge. Embracing her dream to be an independent business woman, she purchased the retail property at 414 Race Street and began the process of creating what would become a specialty shop in downtown Cambridge, called A Few Of My Favorite Things, opening July 12, 2003.
Known as a strong advocate for the growth of Cambridge Main Street, she touched many lives often in agreeable, sometimes disagreeable ways. However, she always respected differing opinions in whatever discussions took place, while readily speaking her mind. She demonstrated leadership to others who followed the same dream. She guided countless others through the startup process, and the realities of being a small business owner.
She is survived by her husband Joe Ruark, father Herb Levy, sister Jo-Anne Levy-Lamoreaux (Brian), nephew Jason, niece Samantha Levy Szygiel and her mother Johanna Levy Frayler. She was preceded in death by her mother, Floss Levy, and brother, Bob Levy.
A celebration of life service will be held at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, 308 High Street, Cambridge, Maryland, on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at 1 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Friends and family are invited to gather after the service at The Wine Bar, at 414 Race Street, for fellowship and light refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Carol’s name can be sent to Baywater Animal Rescue, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.
