Doris Elizabeth Gray of Elliott Island, Maryland passed away Monday, December 10, 2018 at home.
She was born on January 1, 1942 to the late Thomas Powell and Maude Dayton Horsman of Vienna, Maryland. She grew up in the family store on Henry’s Crossroads in Vienna where she spent much of her time helping in the store and working in the fields.
She married David Gray on October 21, 1961 and they had three children. They lived in Cambridge and operated Dave’s Amoco until 1974. Mr. Gray passed away on April 22, 2007.
Doris spent much of her time raising her children until she went to work at Wicomico County Public Library. In 1979 she and her family moved to Cullman, AL where she operated a Day Care Center at the church where she attended. She was actively involved in church serving on the Ladies Auxiliary where she coordinated fundraisers and other activities.
In 1989 Doris and her family moved back to the Eastern Shore and made their home on Elliott Island. She spent 21 years at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center where she worked as Cashier and Patient Registration Clerk until she retired in 2011.
Doris took great pride in her home and was an excellent cook. She spent much of her time cooking, sewing and gardening.
Also known by her close friends as “Dotty” she was also known for her bright red hair and warm smile. She will be terribly missed by her family and all who knew her.
She is survived by her three children Ronald Gray of Elliott Island who was also her caregiver for many years, Rhonda Gray and grandson Brandon of Delmar, MD and Kimberly Esham and her husband Greg of Salisbury, MD; a sister Frances Bradshaw and her husband Leroy of Church Creek, MD as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband David of 45 years were two brothers David and Walter Horsman.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018 beginning 12 Noon at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., 308 High St., Cambridge, MD. Family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, 308 High Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 to help defray funeral cost.
