Ethel Josephine Rippons Parks “Granny”, age 89, of Hoopersville, MD, died Monday night, September 12, 2011 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, MD.

Born on May 11, 1922 in Hoopersville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Cleveland Rippons and Mary Dean Rippons.

On August 2, 1941 she married Benjamin Levin Parks. After being happily married for sixty years, her beloved husband died on March 2, 2001.

In 1945 Granny, as she was affectionately known, became the caretaker and cook for the Hoopers Island Gunning Club. The Doeller Family purchased the club in 1954 and she continued her employment for three generations until her retirement. Granny’s chair still remains in the kitchen to this day.

For twenty years she proudly worked with her daughter and son-in-law at Old Salty’s Restaurant and Gift Shop.

Mrs. Parks was a member of the Hoopers Memorial Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and financial secretary.

She had served as Past President of the PTA for South Dorchester K-8 School. Her hobbies included crocheting, gardening and sewing. Her family is so grateful to have had such a loving mother and granny as well as the many people’s lives she has touched within her community.

Surviving are six children Joyce Parks of Daytona Beach, FL, JoAnn Ashton and her husband Wayne of Hoopersville, MD, Wanda Christopher and her husband Howard of Cambridge, MD, Benjamin Gary Parks and his wife Saundra of Cambridge, MD, Patricia Dean of Cambridge, MD, James Parks and his wife Lynn of Lewes, DE; close family friend, Norma Covington, whom she considered like a daughter; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; her late husband’s family members Calvert Cannon, Betty Jane Parks, Paul and Ellen Ruark, Albanus and Sara Phillips and Rosa Lewis; nieces and nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was a son Benjamin Levin Park, Jr.; granddaughter Julia Ann Ashton; five siblings Ada Jones, Anna Hall, Leroy Rippons, Melvin Rippons, and Eldridge Rippons.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16th at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Doug Ridley and by The Rev. Delmer Willey. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
