Edward "Pete" Daniel Hayden, Sr.

Edward “Pete” Daniel Hayden, Sr. passed away on September 27, 2026, at his home in Crapo, Maryland with his family at his side. He was born on March 24, 1939, in Pasadena, Maryland.

Pete graduated from high school and soon began a period of service that remained an important part of his life. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1958 after high school. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal, E-4, on January 1, 1962. On July 5, 1962, he re-enlisted, and he later received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant, E-5, on January 1, 1965.

One of the most meaningful moments in Pete’s life came in 1962, when he met his wife while stationed in Iwakuni, Japan. Together they began their life in North Carolina later moving to Pasadena, and in 1969 he brought his wife and children to the Eastern Shore, where their family life continued to grow.

He is survived by his wife, Yumiko Hayden. He is also survived by his sons, Eddie Hayden of East New Market, Gary Hayden and his wife Terra of Crapo, and Jimmy Hayden and his wife Heather of Wingate. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Lauren (Josh) of Toddville, Buddy of Cambridge, Taylor (Chris) of Hudson, and Dylan (Chelsie) of Rhodesdale; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Libby. These family members were a lasting part of his life and will carry his memory forward with love.

Pete was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Juanita Shillenger Hayden; his father, Bernard Wingate Hayden; his son, Bernard Hayden; his brothers, Roland, Ronald, Jim, Peck, Johnny, Bernard and Ike; his sisters, Lorraine and Dorothy; and Tracie Whitley, whom he considered a daughter-in-law and who was the longtime companion of his son Eddie for more than 30 years.

He worked for Mclean Contracting Company as a bridge builder on and off for 20 years.

In his free time he enjoyed farming with his John Deer tractor and rabbit hunting. For fun he enjoyed riding his Honda motorcycles. Spending time with his family and his beloved little Libby dog was a highlight in Pete’s life.

He will be remembered with love by his family and by all who knew him. His life was shaped by service, devotion to his family, and the many years he shared with those closest to him.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 beginning 12:00 noon at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, MD with military honors. Pastor Steve Bloodsworth will officiate.
