ELIZABETH M. BRONDER

Elizabeth M. “Bettye” Wheatley Bronder, age 90, a loved and respected resident of The Neck District, Cambridge, passed away quietly at her home on Tuesday night, October 4, 2011.

Born in The Neck District on September 3, 1921, she was the last surviving child of Williams Steele Wheatley and Eva May Seward Wheatley.

Mrs. Bonder grew up in The Neck District, attended Hudson Elementary School and was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1939. She trained at Gallanger School of Nursing, a component of D.C. General Hospital, Washington, D.C. to earn her degree in nursing.

On April 26, 1944 she married John Edmund Bronder of Foley, MN at St. Dominic Hamilton Catholic Church in Baltimore. Mr. Bronder proceeded her in death on December 22, 1981.

Mrs. Bronder raised her family in Hyattsville (Defense Heights), a suburb in Maryland.

In 1973, she returned to The Neck District where she resided until her death.

Mrs. Bronder was a voracious reader, amateur poet, avid gardener, fearless cook and culinary adventurer.

She found great comfort in her religion. Mrs. Bronder was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Churches both in Hyattsville and Cambridge.

Surviving are four children Linda Creasy and her husband Dale of Lynwood, Illinois, John “Jack” Bronder, Jr. and his wife Diane of Hyattsville, MD, Paul Bronder of Bowie, MD and Mark Bronder of Cambridge, MD; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceeded in death by her granddaughter Kate Creasy; daughter-in-law Rosemary Nefos Bronder; three brothers Leonard Wheatley, Nelson Wheatley and Arthur Wheatley; and three sisters Evelyn Richardson, Virginia DeLong and Mildred Jarrett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 15th at St. Mary, Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church, Glasgow Street and Hambrooks Blvd., Cambridge, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. A reception will follow the Mass in Minnette Dick Church Hall. Inurnment will be held privately in Greenlawn Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to Greenlawn Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, PO Box 1464, Cambridge, MD 21613; Friends of the Dorchester County Public Library, 303 Gay St., Cambridge, MD 21613; or The Neck District Volunteer Fire Dept., 954 Cooks Point Rd., Cambridge, MD 21613.
