Elmer Donald Mills, 98, born on October 21, 1927, in Crocheron, Maryland, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, at the Manokin Nursing and Rehab Center in Princess Anne, Maryland. Donald was the son of the late Elmer K. and M. Lavelle Pritchett Mills. A respected member of the community, Donald's legacy as a waterman and family man will be cherished by all who knew him.
At just 11 years old, Donald embarked on his career in the waterman industry, earning three dollars a week working under John Elliott, Jr. He fondly reminisced about crabbing with his father, an activity that ignited his passion for the water. One defining moment in his early years was when he took to his father's boat alone, navigating to Holland Straits and spending the day crabbing. This adventurous spirit marked the beginning of a fulfilling career. Throughout his life, Donald dedicated himself to crabbing, tonging, and pound net fishing. Even after leaving the waters, he continued to support local watermen by mending and crafting pound nets.
Donald received his education at Bishop's Head School No. 3 until he was 11 years old. His life was not only marked by hard work but also by a commitment to his community. He was a long-time member of St. Thomas Church, where he served as a trustee and proudly achieved perfect attendance for many years. Donald was also a past member of Lakes & Straits Fire Co. and participated in the South Dorchester Community Foundation Fishing Tournaments, showcasing both his civic dedication and passion for fishing.
On November 20, 1948, Donald married Phyllis Johnson, with whom he shared a loving partnership. Together, they nurtured a family that includes their daughter Lynne Mills and son Daniel Mills. Donald was a proud grandfather to Lauren Mills and Leigh-Anne French (Dave) and a great-grandfather to Emily Knowles (Greg). He cherished not only his immediate family but also his extended family, which included his nephew Tony Mills (Donna), sister-in-law Flora J. Towers, cousin Margaret Ann Mills Hill, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Phyllis; his granddaughter Michele Mills Moxey; and siblings Maurice W. Mills, Hilda M. Keene, Aleta M. Leonard, R. Vignuelle Mills, Billy L. Mills, and Bobby L. Mills.
A viewing/visitation will take place at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home in Cambridge on Monday, December 29, 2025 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Burial will be private at Dorchester Memorial Park at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Donald's name can be sent to Kitty City Rescue, P. O. Box 1259, Cambridge, MD 21613 or a charity of one's choice.
Elmer Donald Mills will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his craft, his commitment to his community, and the love he had for his family. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
