Emma Todd Powley, 95, of Toddville, Maryland died peacefully on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the home of her son-in-law.

Born October 16, 1922 in Toddville, Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Darius G. Todd and Lydia Meredith Todd.

Mrs. Powley was educated at the Toddville, Robbins, Wingate and Langrall’s elementary schools and graduated from Crapo High School with the class of 1939.   She then graduated from Salisbury State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1943.  Furthering her education, she received a Masters’ Degree from the University of Maryland in 1967.  Mrs. Powley received more education accreditation from Washington College.

On June 22, 1946 she married Frederick D. Powley.  Mr. Powley died on March 6, 1999.

Mrs. Powley’s teaching career began at Riverdale Elementary School in Prince George’s County as a second grade teacher.  After teaching there for two years, she returned to her native Dorchester County to work at Hurlock Elementary School where she was the first in the county to teach manuscript handwriting.  She also taught at Toddville Elementary School with her sister, Wyona Mills and at the Academy School in Cambridge, MD.  Mrs. Powley’s longest teaching tenure was at South Dorchester High School from 1955 to 1977, where she was also the school’s librarian for twenty years.  With her amazing career and dedication, Mrs. Powley has been greatly rewarded through the years when so many of her students have thanked her for the impact she made in their lives.

Mrs. Powley was a life-long member of Zion United Methodist Church in Toddville.  She served as chairman of the Administrative Board and was secretary for over thirty years, as well as teaching Adult Sunday School for over thirty-five years.  She was a member of the United Methodist Women and served as president and secretary.  Also, Mrs. Powley formerly served on the Pastor-Parish Committee for the St. Thomas Charge as a chairman.

Mrs. Powley was a member of the Dorchester County Retired Educators Association and the Maryland Teachers Association.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband on their various trips to Canada, Florida, the Gulf Coast, Mexico, Hawaii and South Dakota.  She enjoyed reading, especially historical novels about the Colonial Period and the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.  She liked to keep current on political and government affairs.  Mrs. Powley also enjoyed gardening, embroidery, crocheting, caning chairs and refinishing furniture.

Surviving is her granddaughter Mallorie McCune and her husband Eldon of  Colorado Springs, CO; grandson Colin Crouch of Laurel, MD; son-in-law Pastor Gary L. Crouch and his wife Madeline of Toddville, MD; nieces and nephews Carlye Windsor and his wife Shirley of Trappe, MD, Judy Martin and her husband Bill of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary Price and her husband Tim of Berlin, MD, Martha Pfieffer and her husband Steve of Ocean Pines, MD, Michaelle Berthoin and her husband Claude of Ormond Beach, FL and David Todd of Ocean City, MD; great nieces and nephews Clint Martin and his wife Tammy, Stuart Martin and his wife Buffy, Laura Slowey and her husband Daniel, Mead Windsor, Todd Windsor, Claudia Berthoin, Christopher Price, Matthew Price, Jonathan Price, Zachary Farnan, Joshua Farnan, Haley Todd and Jeffery Todd; sisters-in-law Etta Lee Powley and June Todd.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were her daughter Donna Crouch, sisters, Reita Powley and her husband Edgar (Bill), Wyona Mills and her husband Hobart, Edna Windsor and her husband Carlton; brothers D. Carroll Todd and his wife Gloria, Omar W. Todd, Reginald Powley; sister and brother-in-laws Roberta Jones and her husband Ogle, Elizabeth Ritter and her husband Paul, MaryAnn Crandell and her husband Monroe, Ruby Bloodsworth and her husband Brooksie, Watson Powley and his wife Frances, Tommie Powley and his wife Carrie and a great-nephew John Windsor.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge beginning 12:30 where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Officiating at the service will be Rev’s Gary Crouch and Michael LaClair.

Burial will follow at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.

Serving as pallbearers will be Colin Crouch, David Todd, Todd Windsor, Tony Hayden, Don Simmons and Richard Kendall.  Honorary pallbearers are Carlye Windsor and Billy Gootee.
