Helen Combes from Woolford, Maryland, went into the arms of our Heavenly Father on June 23, 2018 at the age of 91. She was an inspiration to all with her boundless energy, perseverance and willing to help others.

Born December 12, 1926 in St. John’s Hospital Brooklyn, New York, she was a daughter of Helen Curley and Arthur Buchardt. She grew up in Baldwin, Long Island and started piano lessons at age four and at the age of 16 she decided to attend the Traphagen School of Fashion. Her interest and skill were in art, fashion and music. Upon graduation she worked in the fashion industry and married the love of her life Kenneth in 1946 and moved to the Massapequa, New York.

In 1982 she and her husband retired and moved to Woolford, Maryland. When her husband died in 1983 she elected to stay and devote her life to community service and volunteer work, which included organizing fashion shows for Pleasant Day, volunteering at Blackwater Wild Life Refuge, receiving her 25-year pin for service in 2010 and served as president of Friends of Blackwater from 1989-1993. She was a member of the Forever Young Homemakers, serving as president 6 years later, a volunteer for the Dorchester General Hospital auxiliary and worked at the Robin Hood for over 20 years. In addition, she was an advocate for the Care & Share program and helped raise money to help people in need, including organizing the Santa Swim. She was active in diabetic education since she had Type 2 diabetes.
