Joseph Kenneth Ruark, Sr.

Joseph Kenneth Ruark, Sr., 79, affectionately known as Joe, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Maryland. Born on June 20, 1946, to the late Elmer Ruark and Brooksie Creighton Ruark in Cambridge, Maryland, Joe lived a life deeply rooted in the waters of his hometown, dedicating himself to the age-old traditions of crabbing and oystering.

From his earliest days working off a modest 16-foot skiff to running the 40-foot Robbins “Four J’s”—and many boats in between—Joe demonstrated an extraordinary work ethic and remarkable skill on the water. He embodied the rugged lifestyle that shaped his character. Known as a hardworking waterman, Joe was also recognized for his love of speed. He was never one to turn down a good race and could never go fast enough on the water..

It was in his teenage years that Joe met the love of his life, Janet Bell. Their connection blossomed and they married on July 17, 1965, building a life together that would include both family and entrepreneurial ventures. Among their proudest accomplishments was founding Four J’s Seafood, a crab-picking factory that stood as a testament to their dedication and partnership for over twenty years.

Joe was a man with a heart of gold, known not only for his willingness to help anyone in need, but also for his generosity—never asking for anything in return. Each Christmas, Joe and Janet hosted dozens of family members, welcoming them into their home with abundant food and fellowship. He cherished his family deeply, leaving behind an enduring legacy of kindness and commitment.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Bell Ruark; his sons Joseph K. “JoJo” Ruark, Jr. and his partner Katie Coats, as well as Josh Ruark and his wife Kirsten; his sisters Etta Lee Powley, Bonnie Newcomb (Paul), and Nancy Todd; his brothers Elmer Ruark, Luther Ruark, Sr., Clarence Ruark (Janet); and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was a proud grandfather to Jacob Ruark, Jade Ruark, and Jaxon Ruark. He also leaves behind many friends who hold him dear in their hearts.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Freddie Ruark and Arvie Ruark.

A visitation to honor Joe’s life will be held on May 8, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, located at 308 High Street Cambridge, Maryland. Following the visitation, a memorial service will be conducted at the same location beginning 1:00 PM with Pastor Chuck Hudson officiating.

Joseph Kenneth Ruark, Sr.’s life was a tapestry woven with dedication to family, community, and the enduring spirit of the Chesapeake Bay waters. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him, reminding us of the strength found in hard work and the warmth of a generous heart.
