Margaret Austin Smith “Peggy” McCracken, age 73, of Oxford, MD, formerly of Trappe, MD, died on Thursday evening, May 7, 2009 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.

Born on April 30, 1936 in Easton, MD, she was the daughter of the late George Austin Smith and Margaret Salisbury Smith.

Miss Peggy was a graduate of Easton High School, Class of 1954.

On June 18, 1955 she married Floyd A. McCracken. He died on March 16, 2008.

In her younger years, Miss Peggy was a caterer with her friend the late Eleanor Towers where they had served several parties throughout Talbot County. For most of her working life, Miss Peggy worked for Todd’s Creation Pillow Factory in Easton, MD.

Miss Peggy was a member of Trappe United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Trappe Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, Oxford Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Moose Lodge #1520 Easton, MD.

Miss Peggy loved to cook, bake, play word search games and go out to lunch with her friends.

Surviving is a son George McCracken of Trappe, MD and his girlfriend Rita Neal; a daughter Margaret Jane Yockey and her husband Sam of East New Market, MD; a sister-in-law Emma Mae Davis of Harrington, DE; several nieces and nephews; and Erika Nelson whom she thought of as a granddaughter.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two sisters-in-law Leila Kotula and Irene Messick; four brothers-in-law William “Junior” McCracken, Howard McCracken, Freddie McCracken and Robert McCracken.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Tuesday, May 12th at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., where the family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Denzil Cheek. Burial will follow at The Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.

Pallbearers will be Mike Larrimore, Freddie McCracken Jr., Craig McCracken, Danny McCracken, Kevin Yockey and David Yockey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in Mr. McCracken’s memory to the Trappe Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 86, Trappe, MD and Oxford Volunteer Fire Dept., 300 Oxford Rd., Oxford, MD 21654.
