Mary Helen Waller, cherished mother, grandmother, beloved sister, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, in Hurlock, Maryland. On May 13, 1945, Mary was born in Cambridge, Maryland to the late Robert Downing and Jean Koski Downing. Mary lived a life full of compassion, care, and unwavering dedication to her family and profession.
Throughout her career, Mary worked selflessly in the healthcare field, serving as a nursing tech at First Baptist Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, before returning to her roots in Cambridge, where she continued her career at Dorchester General Hospital. Her passion for caring for others shone brightest in the Pediatric Unit, where she touched the lives of countless children and their families. Her warm heart and kind spirit made her a beloved presence in the hospitals she worked in.
Beyond her professional life, Mary found joy in the little things. She had a talent for baking, crafting beautiful cakes and homemade biscuits that would bring delight to family gatherings. Thrift shopping with her daughter-in-law, Sandra, was another favorite pastime, allowing Mary to be creative and discover hidden treasures. Amidst her daily activities, she found solace in the music of Elvis Presley, often filling the air with the heartfelt tunes that resonated with her soul.
Mary's proudest accomplishments were evident in her role as a mother and grandmother. She dedicated herself fully to her children, instilling values and providing a nurturing environment during their formative years. Her love for her grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Abbott, was boundless. She reveled in every opportunity to create memories with them, always eager to share stories, laughter, and wisdom.
Mary leaves behind her loving son, Harvey Waller, Jr., and his wife, Sandra; her devoted daughter, Kelly Waller Abbott; and her adored grandsons, Nathan and Nicholas Abbott. She is also survived by her two brothers, Robert Downing, Jr. and Roger Downing, as well as cousins Lilly Wooten and Edyie Fink. Kay Townsend, a special friend, and her former husband, Harvey Waller, Sr., the father of her children, will also hold cherished memories of Mary close to their hearts.
As we remember Mary Helen Waller, we honor a woman who embodied love, dedication, and warmth. Her legacy will continue through her family and all those lucky enough to have known her. She will be deeply missed, yet her spirit will forever remain alive in the hearts of her loved ones.
