Nita Burdette

Nita Fornea Burdette of Cambridge, Maryland, died peacefully at home on Saturday, July 24, 2010. Born on March 14, 1922, in Angie, Louisiana. Mrs. Burdette was the daughter of the late Iddo Ball Fornea and Beulah Harrell Fornea.

Mrs. Burdette, a registered nurse, met her husband-to-be, Dr. Lewis M. Burdette, at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, during his internship. On September 9, 1944, they married. A well-respected physician and friend in the Cambridge community, Dr. Burdette died on June 22, 2000.

After finishing his residency in Washington, the Burdettes moved to Cambridge with their two young daughters in 1953. Throughout her life in Cambridge, Mrs. Burdette remained active in community affairs. She taught Red Cross Home Nursing for two years at what was to become Dorchester General Hospital. She was a long-time volunteer of the hospital auxiliary and a charter member of the Robin Hood Shop. She has been a continuing, active member of the Dorchester County Historical Society, where she served on the Board of Trustees and as a docent. A long-time member of Zion United Methodist Church, she served on the Restoration Campaign, Administrative Board, and Board of Trustees.

She is survived by her two daughters, Diane Burdette Blanche of New Orleans and Debbie Burdette Ihrman and her husband, Bruce of Cambridge; three grandchildren, Frederick Blanche and his wife, Renee, Lewis B. Blanche, and Katherine Taylor Creecy; great-grandson, Alexander Lewis Borie Blanche; and her brother, Iddo, Jr. and numerous relatives in Louisiana.

Preceding in death were two brothers, Mason and Bishop, her sister, Yvonne, and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Stuart Creecy.

A memorial service will be held at her home at Noon on Saturday, July 31. Mrs. Burdette’s nephew, The Reverend Stanley Fornea, will preside at this celebration of her life to which friends and neighbors are invited. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Thorn Rose Cemetery; Staunton, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Burdette's name to a charity of one's choice.
