Reverend English

The Rev’d William Lawson English, only child of William Marion English and Mollie Stewart English, was born July 19, 1936 in the Dorchester General Hospital, Cambridge, Maryland. Rev. English died peacefully, Tuesday morning, August 25, 2015 at his home.
William graduated from Cambridge High School in 1954; Wesley College in Dover, Delaware in 1957 and the American University in Washington, DC in 1960. He was in the office of the Treasurer of the U.S. in Washington from 1960 until 1962.
He matriculated to the General Theological Seminary in New York City, September 1962 and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Divinity in 1965. He was ordained priest in the Episcopal Church December 21, 1965 in Easton, Maryland by the Rt. Rev’d Allen J. Miller, Bishop of Easton.
Rev. English served as Rector of St. Stephen’s, East New Market; St. Andrew’s, Hurlock and the Chapel of the Epiphany, Preston, from 1965 through 1966.
In 1967 he returned to New York City to become the priest at St. Mary’s, Castleton, Staten Island, N.Y. where he remained until his retirement November 1, 1999. He served St. Mary’s for 32 years.
After his retirement he moved back to Cambridge, Maryland where he lived in his childhood home until his death.
Surviving him are several cousins and good friends.
Funeral services will be conducted from Old Trinity Church, Church Creek, Maryland on Monday, August 31, 2015 beginning 12 noon. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge. Officiating will be several of Rev. English’s Colleagues.
