Valjean A. Sutherland

Valjean A. Sutherland (née Baker), 74, born on September 7, 1951, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, departed this life on June 28, 2026, at UMSMC @ Easton. Her journey was marked by warmth, steadfast love for her family, and simple joys that shaped a beautiful life.

From her earliest days in Pittsburg, Valjean found joy in the world around her. At 18, she made the bold move to Glenburnie, Maryland, where she would nurture her growing family and lay down roots that would flourish for generations. Glenburnie was a place of laughter, of milestones, and of family gatherings—where her devotion as a mother, wife, and friend became evident to all who knew her.

Later, Valjean transitioned her life to Maryland’s Eastern Shore, a place that welcomed her spirit and became her home. Here, she found peace, new friendships, and the space to enjoy the quiet pleasures that meant so much to her. She was a devoted fan of the Pittsburg Steelers, cheering ardently for her team and passing on this tradition to her loved ones. Her gentle heart found companionship in her beloved cats and her dog, Toby, who brought her comfort and camaraderie throughout the years.

Above all, Valjean’s legacy is reflected in her devoted family. She is survived by her children—Jennifer Testa, Megan Eldridge, Marcus Testa, and her step-son, James Blake Sutherland, III and his wife Natalie—carry forward her kindness, resilience, and zest for life. The blessings of grandchildren—Haley Strauss, Michael Testa, Wyatt Sutherland, and Andrea King; and her sister, Lois M. Baker were among Valjean’s greatest treasures, each one cherished and adored.

Valjean’s memory is joined in eternal peace with beloved family members who preceded her: her father, Nockie Baker and mother Lois A. Fester Baker and her husband, James Blake Sutherland, Jr. The bonds she fostered with each will remain unbroken, woven into the fabric of the lives she touched.

Valjean’s love for her family, pets, and the simple pleasures of life—whether it was a spirited Steelers game or the comfort of a faithful pet—grounded her and brought happiness to those around her. Her journey from Pittsburg to Maryland was one filled with purpose, guided always by kindness, laughter, and a steadfast heart.
