Wayne Simmons, Sr.

Wayne Davis Simmons, Sr., 82 of Cambridge, Maryland passed away on Thursday morning, December 13, 2018 at UMSMC at Dorchester.

Born in Golden Hill, Maryland on November 7, 1936 he was a son of the late Ward A. and Etta Riggins Simmons.

Wayne attended the local schools and graduated from Cambridge High School with the Class of 1954.

In 1954 he joined the U.S. Army National Guard and after thirty years of dedicated service to his country was honorably discharged with the Rank of SFC.  Wayne’s love for the Army was very strong.  He was especially proud of the time served on Bethany Beach, DE as an instructor.

Wayne met and married his true love, the former Mary Ellen McGlaughlin on July 31, 1964 and together they raised three sons.

Wayne and Mary made their home in Cambridge and after working at Wire Cloth for many years, he retired as a welder/fabricator.

He was a lifetime member of White Haven Methodist Church, Post #88 29th Division Association, American Legion Post #91 and Cambridge Skeet Club.

Wayne’s favorite past times included hunting, fishing, bowling, watching westerns and playing his upright base with his church group. He loved spending time with his family and also his Pomerania dog “Booboo”

Surviving Wayne is his wife Mary Ellen, children Wayne Simmons, Jr.(Tamara), John Simmons (Stephanie) and Matthew Simmons (Tabitha);grandchildren David Simmons, Josh Simmons, Devin Shockley, Richard Dawson, Marissa Simmons, William Simmons and Geoffrey Simmons; a brother Ward “Sonny” Simmons (Carol); several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 beginning 11:30 a.m. at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge.  Family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Pastor Dave Stewart.  Interment will follow at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veteran Cemetery Chapel with military honors.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kenny Wheatley, Bobby Brooks, David Simmons, Geoffrey Simmons, Arthur Todd and Eddie Lloyd.
