William “Bill” Harold Dennis, a beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, peacefully passed away on May 12, 2025, at the Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Maryland, surrounded by his three children. Born on December 25, 1933, in Dorchester County, Maryland, to Harold Dennis and Florence Jones Dennis Peed, he was a testament to the spirit of his community.
A proud graduate of Vienna High School, Bill distinguished himself athletically, becoming a star pitcher on the baseball team while also excelling at basketball and soccer.
For over 30 years, Bill dedicated his professional life to serving as a State Highway engineer, where his contributions helped shape the infrastructure that keeps communities connected.
Bill was also a proud veteran, having served in the United States Army for three years, achieving the rank of Specialist Third Class. His service to his country was a point of pride for him and further illustrated his dedication to the community he loved.
Bill was a simple man finding joy in the simplest pleasures of life. He cherished the time spent hunting, fishing, and crabbing. His sailboat, aptly named “Escape,” provided him with countless hours of joy on the open water, a refuge where he could enjoy both solitude and the company of friends. He was proud to work on the water net fishing and trot lining crabs with his brother Gene Peed. Bill enjoyed playing pool and darts. Friends and family alike will fondly remember his humor and the joy he took in joking and teasing those he liked.
Bill is survived by his children: William Mark Dennis and his wife Becky, Teresa Lynn Dennis Ewing, and Barbara Anne Dennis Mauk, each of whom carries forward his legacy of love and laughter. His grandchildren, Stephen Todd Ewing, William Kane Dennis, Brad Mark Dennis, Richard Hunter Mauk, Brittney Nicole Mauk, Eric W. Mahon, and Brian J. Mahon, along with his great-grandchildren Peyton, Brooks, Caroline, Delaney, Grayson, Carter and William Mauk due to arrive in July will remember their grandfather for his unwavering support, guidance, and the many cherished moments spent together. Bill was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother, Eugene “Gene” L. Peed, who holds treasured memories of their shared time working on the water together.
Bill was predeceased by his loving wife, Hannah “Fay” Forester Dennis, who he married on July 3, 1954. She passed away on November 18, 2014 and his parents Harold and Florence Jones Dennis Peed. Although they are no longer with us, their spirits remain intertwined in the hearts of those who loved Bill.
A private service celebrating Bill's extraordinary life will be held at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Maryland with military honors. The gathering will serve as a tribute to a man who found immense joy in the everyday moments and whose legacy will continue to shine bright through the lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Vienna Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 5, Vienna, MD 21869
