William Bruce Meekins, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away on May 25, 2025, at the Tidal Health Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury, Maryland. Born on August 15, 1950, in Maryland, he embraced life with kindness and a spirit of generosity that touched the hearts of all who knew him.
A proud graduate of South Dorchester High School, Bruce completed his education in 1968. Bruce’s leadership qualities spanned his lifetime. Some may remember him as an Airpax (Plant 2) Plating Department and 2nd Shift Supervisor. He went on to manage Goose Creek Seafood for Jack Colbourne. As a skilled carpenter, he would become associated with local building contractors Bill Barnes, Dorchester Service Associates and Glenn P. Ruark. His love for carpentry was not just a job; it was a passion, and he took immense pride in all aspects of his craft. He also engaged in the timeless traditions of crabbing and oystering on the water.
Bruce’s interests extended beyond the worksite. He delighted in building birdhouses of different designs, eagerly sharing his creations. One of his favorite pastimes was singing gospel music in the St. Thomas Church Choir. In late years, he enjoyed attending various local churches, sharing his testimony and fellowship with everyone. Bruce served his community by holding variety of offices in local churches and fire companies. He is a member of the Dorchester County Fireman’s Association Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed fishing with family and friends.
His heart was as big as his talents; he was always thinking about others, a quality that endeared him to many. Family was at the core of Bruce's life. He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Carol Lewis Meekins, with whom he shared nearly fifty years of marriage—celebrating their union on December 20, 1975. His joy continued through his daughter, Sarah Elliott, who, along with her husband David, brought him much happiness. Bruce cherished the time he spent with his grandson, Garrett Elliott, who made his heart swell with pride.
Bruce's legacy also includes his sister, Susan Shockley, her husband Carl, and numerous nieces and nephews who hold fond memories of laughter and love with him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Robert Meekins, Sr. and Ruth Todd Meekins, siblings Robert Meekins Jr. and Barbara Rothwell, who welcomed him with open arms. He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law Wesley Rothwell, sister-in-law Ruth Ann Meekins and nephew Tony Meekins.
A graveside service to honor Bruce's life is scheduled at 11 am on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Old Trinity Church Cemetery in Church Creek, MD, with Pastor Michael LaClair officiating where friends and family will gather to share in their love and remembrance of a remarkable man. In this moment of reflection, let us take comfort in the cherished memories we hold close and the legacy of kindness and craftsmanship he leaves behind.
The family welcomes all to the Church Creek Firehouse for a time of food and fellowship after the service. If you cannot attend the graveside service, feel free to join the family at the firehouse.
