Joan Dukes

Joan Terry Dukes, 75, of Marion Station, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Born on January 2, 1946 in Hoopers Island, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ruby Travers.

Joan attended and graduated from South Dorchester in Golden Hill.

Taking care of animals was Joan’s favorite pastime.  She sheltered cats, birds and a dog.  Thrift shopping and watching soap operas were things she also enjoyed doing.

Joan was an Elvis Presley fan and was thrilled last year as her niece Kathy took her to see Graceland.

Surviving Joan is her sister Barbara Matthews of East New Market, several nieces and nephews and her companion Loydd Web.

Preceded in her death were sister’s Frieda Johnson, Nancy Stafford, Diane Towers and Loretta Wroten.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 16, 2021 beginning 12 pm at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, Cambridge, with Rev. Richard Prahl officiating.

A viewing and visitation with family will be held an hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow the service at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Humphries, Donald Edwards, David Lednum and Dale Humphries.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent in Joan’s name to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
